Gordon Burgett's Spousal Plan Sheet for Creating a Super Second Life Together
HOW TO CREATE YOUR OWN
SUPER SECOND LIFE TOGETHER
I. Go on a mini-retreat—together.
A. Set aside a day to do the following:
1. Take an objective, in-depth look at your life to date. For both
yourself and as a couple:
a. What would you like to continue in your “second life”?
b. What would you like to significantly change in your second life?
c. What would you like to eliminate from your second life?
2. Then each of you prepare a “Dream List” of everything that you personally
would like to do in your final 30 years. Do this separately and don’t discuss
your lists until they are completed.
3. Bring those lists together and compare them, item by item. Each
person should explain any dream that isn’t fully understood by the other.
4. Create a new “Dream List” from those individual items that you share
in common. Agree on the wording so that this shared list fully expresses
both partner’s dream.
5. Then create an individual list for each person of their distinct
dreams that do not directly involve the other person.
6. The result is a list that you want to pursue together, plus individual
lists with dreams that should have the support and approval of the other
spouse. (Should contention exist about any item on any of the three lists,
this is the time to resolve that contention—or to set a specific time in
the future to work at that resolution.)
II. After the retreat, prepare the following no-nonsense reports:
A. Super Second Life Money Worksheet: (all estimates) annual living
expenses, annual income, deficit or surplus, Super Second Life expenses,
and additional income sources (if needed)—at five-year intervals.
B. Super Second Life Physical and Mental Health Review: a detailed,
specific analysis of both of your current (and possible future) health
statuses. At every negative point, list proactive steps each intends to
take to realize their ideal health potential.
III. From the three “Dream Lists,” prioritize each dream as either
top- or lower-priority. Focus on the top-priority dreams in the following
IV. Create “Time Boxes” (usually 5 years each) and assign those
top priority dreams from all three lists into one or many Time Boxes where
they might be most appropriately enjoyed.
V. Estimate the cost to realize those top-priority dreams in
each Time Box and determine how to apportion the dispensable funds for
the combined and individual dreams.
VI. Create an Action Plan for each top-priority dream. Fill in
the Action Steps for each.
VII. Update, review, modify, and expand your Super Second Life
Action Plans whenever you wish—but at least at the opening year of the
respective Time Boxes.
